Nice or bright... Would you rather...?

Would you rather...

Have a friend who is nice but dim or bright and mean?

What about a doctor... nice but average or horrible but brilliant

What if they were your surgeon?

What about your daughter? Would you rather she was bright and mean to all but her select few or lovely to everyone but not really cutting edge? What if she could be a surgeon one way or cleaner the other? And what if 10 years on, the surgeon had a breakdown and the cleaner had contracts all over all the blue chip companies in London and became a roaring success because people liked doing business with her but the surgeon was too prickly for most people’s taste except those who appreciated her brilliance?

This is not a real choice. Just a thought experiment to reflect on what we look for and what we
aspire for in others we care about.

I reckon we need a bit of it all, and we learn from each other. The best ideas are developed communally. Though it may take someone to start it. That’s courageous cos you know someone’s going to build on it and sometimes building starts with demolition. But if that moves an idea on then pride and ego may get in the way of development. That’s okay too. It’s human.

Trying hard may not be enough but maybe it is where trying is the goal itself.

I heard a lot of x v y today.

ie: management v leadership, firm grip v laissez faire,  collaboration v autonomy, left of the spectrum or right. But
a) why can’t we have both instead of one? Use tools at the most suitable time rather than have a rigid view
b) I forget my second point. It obviously wasn’t that memorable.

Signing off now. It’s been a long day
